The Jacket is a story of reincarnation. The story is told in the first person by Darrell Standing, a university professor serving life imprisonment for murder. Prison officials try to break his spirit by using a torture device called \"the jacket.\" Standing discovers how to withstand the torture by entering a kind of trance state, in which he walks among the stars and experiences portions of past lives. Jack London was an American author, journalist, and social activist, a pioneer in the world of commercial magazine fiction and was one of the first fiction writers to obtain worldwide celebrity and a large fortune from his fiction alone. He is best remembered as the author of Call of the Wild and White Fang, both set in the Klondike Gold Rush.
